Workshops are my favourite thing I get to do!
I have led successful poetry workshops within schools, at existing poetry events, at lifestyle and family festivals, and at private group occasions! These workshops are designed for purpose for each event specifically, but are at their heart created to take the fear and pressure out of idea generation, and to allow people who may not have engaged with poetry before to see the benefits of writing for fun, exploration, and discovery!
My most unique offering is Dungeons and Dragons inspired workshops, which use dice rolls and pregenerated tables to turn the process of writing a poem into a fun fantasy adventure. In these workshops, participants are encouraged to view writing as a game, in which unexpected components and obstacles, as well as helpful NPCs and magical items, can affect the final piece in unpredictable and delightful ways.
Goodnighttheskye is a poet, event host and workshop lead that brings the whimsy into every space they’re in - while simultaneously never losing sight of the emotional impact of poetry. I had the pleasure of taking part in a recent workshop hosted by them Inkspill - a local community of performers, writers and audience members meeting in Huddersfield every month. I travelled from York specifically to see them, and was not disappointed.
The workshop itself was engaging, creative and unique: using DND game mechanics Incorporated into several writing exercises. I especially loved the guided meditation at the beginning of the session, which goodnighttheskye led with such compassion and patience, creating a really safe and magical space to lose myself in. Perfect for the tasks after of responding to ‘Quest Hooks’ and using them to create new pieces or edit older ones. By the end, I had two new WIP’s. I think every workshop needs goodnighttheskye’s style and sparkle ✨
The workshop itself was engaging, creative and unique and created a magical, safe space to write and explore.
~ No Dry Eyes Poetry (@no_dry_eyes_poetry)I had a wonderful time at goodnighttheskye's workshop! I always enjoy this event but their prompts worked particularly well. It was an excellent time, followed by a particularly fantastic open mic. As a tiefling main I was called out, though..
~ John C (@theevilcabbage)“There was no doubt as to the high quality of goodnighttheskye’s preparation, their gentle and caring demeanour, or the pacey nature intended for the workshop. Everything was geared around creativity, empowerment, self-respect and pride in their work, enabling my students (and me!) to generate material safely, imaginatively, in a respectful and appreciative environment.* *goodnighttheskye crafted the session with a wonderful sense of balance between technique and freedom, originality and the pilfering of ideas, and between confident performance and attentive listening. It was astonishing how quickly Rhiannon managed to inspire students to produce fragments and pieces of work that were thoughtful, meaningful and genuinely beautiful.”
